“It Takes a Village”

This painting holds deep story — a story of life, of birth, of struggle, and the strength found in our women, our men, and our whole community.

It speaks to the journey of bringing a baby into the world. For some women, that journey is long and heavy. Some walk with sadness, carrying the loss of babies never held, or dreams not yet fulfilled. These are the stories of our women who’ve faced miscarriages, infertility, and heartache — but who still carry hope. Some are blessed with rainbow babies — little ones who come after great loss, bringing healing and light.

It also honours the women who’ve stepped up to raise children — even when it wasn’t their plan. Aunties, sisters, cousins, and grandmothers who’ve become mums in their own way.

It honours single dads who walk both paths — strong, gentle, doing the best they can for their little ones.

We also pay respect to the strong men in our communities — the fathers, uncles, brothers, and grandfathers — who work hard, often quietly, to provide for their families. Who go out every day, carry the load, and return home with love in their hearts and food on the table. Their strength, protection, and presence keep our families grounded.

And our Elders — our nan and pop — who step in when needed, guiding the next generation with culture, story, and deep love.

In our way, raising a child is not the job of one person. It’s the whole mob — the aunties, uncles, nan, pop, cousins, dads and mums — all walking alongside that little one. That’s how we raise strong kids. That’s how we keep culture strong.

This painting is a tribute to all of them.
To those who birth, those who raise, those who provide, and those who guide.

Because in our communities, it truly takes a village.
